About Us

JF & M understands and appreciates the stress a client often experiences at the time a decision to retain a lawyer must be made. Our approach is to address the client’s needs sympathetically, but realistically. At an early stage, the client deserves to know what can be accomplished, and more importantly, at what cost.

Our firm attempts to answer those questions early into the solicitor and client relationship – with the utmost honesty and integrity.

Our commitment is to render effective and efficient, quality legal service at affordable rates.

Our History

JF & M has been a cornerstone of the legal community in Pembroke and Renfrew County for well over a century (1896). The firm’s founder, Peter White, was a lawyer who belonged to one of the founding families of Pembroke.

H.B. Johnson came to Pembroke and joined Mr. White in practice in 1906. During WWI, Mr. White moved to Toronto. while Mr Johnson continued Mr. White’s practice in Pembroke and developed a large, diverse clientele.

In 1928, Mr. Johnson became Crown Attorney for Renfrew County, a position he held until 1952. He continued with the private practice of law as a barrister and solicitor while he was Crown Attorney. He was the oldest practising lawyer in Canada at the time of his retirement in 1974 at age 93. He passed away in 1986 when he was 106. His career spanned 68 years.

Mr. H.B. Johnson’s legacy to the people of Renfrew County is unparalleled. Our firm retains his name today out of respect for the groundwork he laid in establishing our reputation for dedication and loyalty to our clients.

James W. Fraser, joined H.B. in practice in 1967. Jimmy was a Pembroke boy, born and bred. His father before him was a former Mayor of Pembroke and Warden of Renfrew County and he descended from seven pioneer families to the region. Jimmy practised in virtually all areas of law over his very distinguished forty five year career and he always maintained service to the members of his community as his foremost priority.

Sadly, he passed away in 2007 and is sorely missed by his family, friends and colleagues. The Renfrew County Law Association has honoured Mr. Fraser by naming its library the “James W. Fraser Law Library” to acknowledge the role he played in initiating a library collection to ensure that our local legal community is equipped to competently represent our clients.
